Before we begin...

Students are expected to come to class each week with the assigned readings completed in advance, and prepared to discuss the main arguments and how they relate to the course themes. The readings and assignments for this course are extensive and sometimes difficult. Students should carefully consider the time investment required before committing to the course.

Assignment & evaluation details (pdf)

Seminar Presentation - 20% - beginning Jan 25

Students are required to give a 15-20 minute presentation on one of the required readings. In addition to summarising the main points, students must critically evaluate the article and relate it to the week's other readings and the broader course themes. Student will also provide a 1-page handout for other students, and lead the class in discussion following their presentation. Presentation details will be provided in class and sign-up will take place in the first class.

Individual Research Project - 35% - Due Mar 1

Students are required to conduct an individual research project on a topic related to course themes and agreed with the Instructor one month before the due date. It may take one of the following formats, with details provided in class:

EITHER a written essay

OR a web-based project (including written text)

OR a drawn or photographed project (including written text)

Group Project - 30% - Due Mar 22

Students will form small groups (3-4 people) and create a guide to the city and cultures of Ottawa, agreed with the Instructor one month before the due date. The guide may take one of the following formats, with details provided in class:

EITHER paper-based (like a book)

OR object based (like a diorama or exhibit)

OR electronic (like a web site)

OR video (like a short film)

OR sound-based (like an audio walking tour)

Journal - 15% - Due Mar 29

Students are required to keep a weekly journal of their class notes, research and field observations. The journal can take one of the following formats, with details provided in class:

EITHER a weblog (set up with the help of the Instructor)

OR a hand-written & drawn account (using a dedicated notebook)
